Tinkery – Wire Experience Workshop
Explore with us world of traditional hand-crafts! Bitter bread ..Slovak tinkers ("drotári") were wandering from door to door all over the Kingdom of Hungary, all over the world. They discovered and developed easy technology-based on hand-folding, tying and braiding of wires without welding. Their heritage is still alive. Tinkery and its tradition made it to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO. Why did the craft originate in this area? What was "krošňa", "haftovanie" or "Džarek"? What was a story of these nomads? Let´s discover story of Tinkers ("drotári") as they developed from door to door traders to factory producers. By the turn of the 20th century, great tinkers' workshops had arisen in Germany, Belgium, Poland, Russia and the Balkans. Beyond these countries, about 250 such factories existed in the rest of Europe and between 30 and 40 smaller shops in North America. From all over the world, tinkers sent their savings back to their native villages in Slovakia, sustaining their families and the economy of one of the poorest regions in Europe. Overtime work with wire developed from industrial use to one of the most unique artistic crafts in Slovakia.
